FIT, or Feed-in Tariff, was a government scheme designed to promote renewable energy generation. Under FIT, homeowners and businesses were paid for the electricity they generated from renewable sources such as solar panels and fed back into the grid. The scheme provided a financial incentive to invest in renewable energy technologies, helping to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability.

The FIT scheme in the UK closed to new applicants on March 31, 2019. Existing participants continue to receive payments according to their agreement terms. Since the closure of FIT, homeowners and businesses now typically benefit from savings on their electricity bills through self-consumption of solar-generated power rather than exporting excess electricity to the grid for a payment.

In place of FIT, there is now the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This scheme requires large energy suppliers to offer payments to small-scale low-carbon generators for the electricity they export to the grid. The payments are based on the amount of electricity exported and the rates set by the suppliers. The SEG aims to encourage the uptake of renewable energy generation and support the transition to a more sustainable energy system.
